First Surrey Heath ‘beginners’ triathlon’ a great success

More than 50 competitors swam, cycled and ran their way around Camberley in the first ever Specsavers GO-TRI Camberley at the Arena Leisure Centre on Sunday (10 September).

GO-TRI is an introduction to triathlon aimed specifically at beginners, and provides a platform for those looking to improve their fitness or get involved in the sport.

With short, manageable distances, GO-TRI Camberley featured a 200m swim in the Arena swimming pool, an 8km cycle through the flat and flowing roads of Camberley before finishing with a 2km run around London Road Recreation Ground.

Available places for the event filled up quickly following its launch in July, and those taking part made the most of the cool, dry weather during the race to post some impressive times.

The event was organised by the Council’s Business Services department in partnership with the Arena Leisure Centre and Go-Tri, supported by Specsavers and British Triathlon.

SHBC Executive Head of Business Daniel Harrison, who also took part in the event, said: “We’re really pleased with how this first ever Specsavers GO-TRI Camberley at the Arena Leisure Centre has gone.

“The response from the public has been amazing, and we hope that we can bring more events like this to Surrey Heath in the future.”

Those taking part also had the opportunity to pick up some tips from GB Age Group triathlete Samantha Taylor, who came along to lend her support to the event. Samantha, who has received funding from the Surrey Heath Sports Council, also receives training facilities support from the Arena Leisure Centre.

Local specialist cycle company Spokes of Bagshot were at the event too, with staff offering bike servicing and expert advice to competitors.

Following the interest in and success of this inaugural event, the Council are hoping to organise more triathlon-related events in the coming year – to register your interest [click here](www.surreyheath.gov.uk/tri)
