Back in October 1958, Purves Stewart took the bold step in creating his own firm of Chartered Accountants in Camberley. Now in 2018, Stewart & Co. are pleased to celebrate 60 Years’ Service.

As part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, the firm recently held an event at the iconic Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst at which long standing clients, local dignitaries and staff enjoyed hospitality and light entertainment. The whole event was in support of Disability Initiative, based in Camberley, a charity that specialises in the provision of care and rehabilitation services to adults with complex physical disabilities and acquired brain injury. Chief Executive of the charity Lucy Brown, supported by one of the charity’s care support staff, both gave very moving speeches on the night. An amount in excess of £1,750 was raised for the charity.

The firm today is based in offices on Knoll Road, Camberley, with a workforce of forty, and managing a portfolio of clients across a variety of industry sectors, trades and professions. The firm’s philosophy has always been to offer a service based upon the highest professional standards, never forgetting that it is the relationship the partners and staff have with their clients that has made Stewart & Co. such a successful business.

Managing Partner David Hartley has seen much change during his many years with the firm. “I joined Stewart & Co. in 1990, becoming a partner in 1992. Our firm has had to evolve like all other successful businesses, to keep pace with changes within the profession and with legislation. We are currently getting ready for Making Tax Digital, effective from April 2019, which will impact many of our clients, and place greater emphasis on timely reporting to HM Revenue & Customs and with it the increased use of online accounting. As with all other changes in legislation over the last sixty years, we will work with our clients and guide them every step of the way.

We have been there before; I can vividly recollect the introduction of Self-Assessment Income Tax back in 1996, which was a significant change in tax legislation. Back then the profession and our clients had concerns on how do we cope with this, over twenty years on it feels like we have never lived without it! Despite all these difficult times in the business and financial world, plus ever increasing compliance and regulation being thrown at us all, our focus remains to help each and every client through the various challenges they face. I must say I am privileged to have a loyal and experienced team working along side me, delivering a quality service year on year. So here’s to the next sixty years!”

There are clients Stewart & Co. still act for who have been with them for the whole of this journey. The current partners David Hartley, Phil Clennell, David McCusker, Gary Robinson and Lucy Evans (pictured below at the entrance of Royal Military Academy) wish to thank all their clients for their loyalty and support and look forward to offering them all many more years of service.

The partners would also like to say a special thank you in the history of Stewart & Co to its former partners Neil Doody and Andrew Cousins, for their valued contributions along the way.
