Surrey Heath announces new Mayor

Councillor John Winterton was chosen as the new Mayor of Surrey Heath at the Surrey Heath Borough Council Annual Meeting on 18 May 2016.

Cllr Winterton has lived in the Borough since 1971, and has been a councillor for the Lightwater ward since 2011. He was last year’s Deputy Mayor for Surrey Heath.

He has served on various committees, including the External Partnerships Select Committee, Performance and Finance Scrutiny Committee and the Planning Applications Committee.

Cllr Winterton was also a Windlesham Parish Councillor for 12 years, serving as Chairman in 2010-11.

At the mayor-making ceremony, Cllr Winterton was sworn in as Mayor of Surrey Heath for the forthcoming year, receiving the Mayoral robe and chain of office. Cllr Winterton succeeds the previous Surrey Heath Mayor, Cllr Joanne Potter.

Cllr Winterton enjoyed a 30-year career in IT with British Airways, from which he retired in 2000. He has since been involved in voluntary work with the “Safer Community Teams” project, while also working part time for a local business.

His interests include meteorology, classical music, gardening and DIY.

While carrying out his mayoral duties throughout the year, Cllr Winterton will be accompanied by his wife, Mrs Di Winterton.
Cllr Winterton said: “I feel very privileged to be affirmed in the office of the 44th Mayor of Surrey Heath, and it is my intention to justify that affirmation by serving the community to the best of my ability.”

The chosen charities for his Mayoral year are Connect Counselling Service and Disability Initiative.

Cllr Winterton added: “These charities offer support in different ways, and indicate my wish to help individuals and families in the borough who experience sometimes sudden, unexpected and devastating problems in their lives, through no fault of their own.”
